Starting problem

Hey there Scotty. I Love your YouTube videos!

I have a 1994 honda accord LX Wagon that I recently bought for $500.

Previous owner said it needed a fuel pump.

I replaced the fuel pump myself (currently in community college to be a mechanic)

When I try to start the car it cranks but doesn't start. I have to turn the key on and off many times before it gets enough fuel to start. Once it starts up it seems to run fairly well. I have driven it around the college parking lot. Transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd gear.

I replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter but the starting issue persists. Needs to be primed before it will start.

What else could be causing this problem?

Many thanks for all you do!

Have you checked the FAQ?

Are you sure you did fuel pump job correctly?

Yes. My instructor assisted me and ensured that it was properly installed.

Have you checked fuses or/and wiring?

Yep all fuses looked good. Grounds looked good and wires look good also.

I'm fairly certain I've seen those already. This is somewhat of a strange problem as it's not completely a no start situation. It will start after priming the fuel rail. And once it is running it drives and stays on.

Yes. The closest thing I have seen is no start issues. My car will start after priming the fuel rail or with starting fluid. The fuel pump is brand new as is the filter. New spark plugs as well. I know the injectors are getting fuel because it will start and then run and drive once it does. So fuel and spark can surely be eliminated as the problem. Tomorrow I will check for compression in the cylinders and fuel pressure.

What are the chances that my honda has a bad distributor?
