Stuck hydraulic lifter or bent valve

Hi Scotty ,

Ill keep it short. I already asked about ignition coil problems , changed but its not that.

Car is Opel Astra 1.4 66kw petrol with 193 000 kilometers (Europe).

Car starts like mad , no compression issues. Accelerates like dream but when at idle speed and temperature you can feel vibration-shakey knocking sounds but nothing like rod knock, detonation or pre ignition.

Took it to a mechanic, no error codes but he assume that it could be bent/burned valve or problems with hydraulic stuck lifters.

How can I check this and what to look for ??

Thanks in advance , your oppinion is always appreciated !

You would start by taking out the spark plugs and doing a compression test of all the cylinders. Then you would have what's called a leak down test on with gauges to see if particular cylinders are not sealing which would show bad valves

@scottykilmer Thank you, will try to do it and post an update.

@scottykilmer So compression seems to be fine and there is no leaking air. I checked hydraulic valve lifters and when I press couple of them when car is shut off they are really stiff and when car works , I open the oil cap I can see that camshaft is rotating but lifter doesnt seem to move up and down , should they be able to pump up and down when I press them ?

I also realized that was the noise when camshaft "scratches" against them and create that arcing, growling noise also in cabin you can feel knocking and vibey-shakey movement.

Thanks in advance Scotty for your time and consideration !

Hi Scotty,

So recently I asked about Opel Astra H noise , first was a coil pack but thats okay, than I thought it might be issue with hydraulic lifters or bent valves which also turned out to be alright as I listened to your advice and tested it.

Yesterday it came to me that it might be dual mass flywheel issue.

I listened carefuly and found the noise coming from transmision in ticking sound directly from place where flywheel is located, when I rev the car it disappears but when it gets back at the idle it knocks couple of times and its noticable inside the car.

So I want to know is it normal sometimes for flywheel to knocks a little bit on an idle and how urgent is it to replace it ?

Car runs smooth , no kicking or knocking when starting and shutting car off.

Here is the youtube video I posted if you want to check , on 0:16 is exact noise

It runs great and has 193000 kilometers on it.

Thanks in advance !

@amiramkec Thank you for letting us know, but please keep all information about a car problem under your original topic. Also be aware that Scotty rarely if ever revisits car problems he has already answered. (Topics merged.)
