We're looking at a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 4cyl. auto. for my daughter. It has high miles - 280K but it's a southern car. The owner is a mechanic who is planning to swap out the engine and transmission with a 75K or less engine. Should we get it? The rest of the car is in good shape, no accidents. For sure, there's a possibility there is wear on the other components.

R U N A W A Y .
No car with 280k miles, especially not a Subaru is worth it.

IF it wouldn't be super high miles,
it'd be decent but not that great and don't last too long.

Nope! Junkyard components are even worse!

It's not a possibly,
things like power steering and suspension components and drivetrain - do not last 280k miles!
Should we get it?
N O !
Junkyard engine and transmission? Not to mention 280K miles worth of wear on everything else. I'd steer clear of that deal.
I’m a fan of the Crosstrek and bought one for both my son and daughter. Great vehicle, especially in foul weather, and very functional.
That said, even though reliability is above average, that is a LOT of miles on a car. Even with a younger engine and transmission, it’s gonna have a lot more parts near end of life.
I suppose if you got it for the right price, it could be ok. But if you have the budget for a second gen Crosstrek (2018+), you’ll be happier.
Is there something wrong with the engine? Or is just high mileage?
What kind of mileage? Was it mostly city driving? Mostly highway driving?
How often was it taken on trail?
How much is it? And how much is a comparable Crosstrek with “regular” mileage?
