howdy from Australia. i have an 05 n/a subaru liberty/legacy wagon that whines on acceleration and decel. kind of sounds like a supercharger.
have had some car friends tell me it could be the power steering pump and others tell me its the gear box wearing out.
p.s the gearbox is the 5spd manual with low range. basically an n/a legacy wagon with an outback box
its been happening for a few months and its now starting to shudder in gear changes and nearly stalls at a stop in neutral
whats going on ?

Check the power steering fluid reservoir first and make sure you have enough fluid. Do you hear the noise more when you turn the steering wheels? If so, it mostlikely the power steering issue. If the power streering syetem puts too much load on the engine and in severe cases, it may reseult in stalling the engine.
