Tacoma | Sizing down on 17" rims

Another tire question for my tacoma.

Bought a used tacoma with a lift and Toyo A/T (285/70r17) tires that are on a 17" XD rim. Should I keep that exact size of tire or should I/can I go 265/70r17 to be closer to stock. Yes, I have a lift, not sure how big as it was also put on when i bought the truck.

Thank you

It really depends what you intend to do with the truck.

It sounds like it's nicely set up for going over rough terrain, so if that's what you want to do, then keep as is.

If it's going to be a pavement princess, then going closer to stock tires is going to bring back some handling, acceleration and road manners. Dropping the lift will improve fuel economy. But if this is the case, then I question why you bought an offroad truck in the first place.

Why bother?  the 265 tires means it's only 20mm narrower than the 285.  About 3/4 inch.

according to the tire size formula, they are substantially taller.

I suppose for longevity and wear on the car. Extra weight? Maybe negligable

The difference is negligible.

8% is not negligible. He will feel it.

His speedo will be off  but as for feeling it, maybe.

100% will. Steering, shifting, braking and acceleration will all be different

Will I need to drop the lift to size down?
