Talk Me Out of It: Ford Edge

So I rented a Ford Edge the past week. It was the only SUV/CUV available in a tight rental market.

The Edge was a very fun SUV/CUV to drive. I think it hits the perfect size of not being too big or too small. The Intelligent AWD was fascinating to watch at work, as the car had a visual of which wheels had power. And it picked up speed well. Made me miss my BMW X5.

My two criticism are an acceleration lag from pedal to response, probably because of the turbo. (The other possibility is the drive by wire isn’t as responsive.)

And one could potentially cut your hand from the trim when closing the door. The edge of the door (no pun intended) is sharp.

With that said, could this Edge be a decent buy? Granted it is not a Toyota or Honda. Or will it be a money like my former BMW X5.

Clarification: Year, engine, transmission?

Just search the forum for "edge". That should be enough to dissuade you.

Yikes. Just did it.

The fact you are asking someone to talk you out of it should already tell you that your subconscious is tapping your shoulder. If it has spent life as a rental car walk away from it. Rental companies barely keep up on maintenance, the do just enough keep the car running until they dump it. Most top tier rental companies don’t keep the car past manufacturers warranty expiration either. They don’t want to spend money on maintenance.  And to be honest, every rental I ever had I drove it like I stole it. Unless you’re paying thousands below it’s book value and a mechanic checks it over and gives you the thumbs up on it I wouldn’t touch it.

Haha. Good point.

I owned an Edge. Drove well, rode well. Then...it was recalled for risk of engine fire.

If you really want to dissuade yourself, check out the resale value. They drop like a rock as it is not a popular SUV choice.

I would pass.

How long did you keep your edge?

I ran it for 2 years and about 45k miles.
