The last great model of bad brands.

Overall on this forum, we often have a low opinion of GM, Chrysler, Nissan, Fiat, BMW, etc... products, and praise Honda and Toyota products.

With that said, of these low opinion makes, what is the last great model/year they produced, that rivals or even surpasses the reliability and quality that we have come to know with Toyota and Honda?  And what made them so great? What made that make go downhill from there?

Well truthfully now those companies ever produce something of the quality that Toyota and Honda makes. Back in the day much more unreliability was even expected of cars I met an American executive who 35 years ago told me Scotty we can't compete with the Japanese we just don't have a quality or the interest in it we want to make short-term profits

When it comes to normal cars, for Nissan I could say the 2001 Nissan Maxima/Altima, with SUVs the 04 Xterra/Pathfinder.

This is assuming good reliability. Compared to the state of the brand the last 5 6 years of the Nissan Xterra and the mid 2010s Frontier trucks were pretty good.

I don't know if this is the last best year but I heard the 08 or so Buick Lucerne with the 3.8 V6 was one of the last comfortable old school reliable Buick cars. For Ford, we might even have to go back as far as 2009 or something I really can't think of a model newer than that worth putting here if there is please comment. I was refering to the 09 Fusion.

I really don't think much of anything made after the early 2000's is worth much.  The manufacturer's fascination with electric junk has made the automobile just another distraction for lazy people who either can't figure out how to actually roll up a window or won't.

None of the other brands ever made something that rivals Toyota or Honda in quality.

Now if you are just talking about good cars for that brand, I would say the following:

1. Buick Grand National

2. Pontiac GTO (2006)

3. Ford Mustang (2010)

4. Chevrolet Corvette (C5)

5. Oldsmobile Cutlass (Old School)

6. Plymouth Road Runner (Old School)

7. AMC Gremlin (Just Nostalgia)

8. Dodge Viper GTS (last year of production)

9. Honda S2000 (any year)

10. Toyota Supra Turbo

11. Nissan GT-R (recent years)

12. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9

13. Subaru WRX STI

That would be my picks for those brands.

Thanks mod man. Curious, any chance you have a fav BMW or Fiat that might make this list?

I do have a BMW. I like the newer V8 M3's. As for Fiat, I think I would say the 124 Spider Abarth.

that Gremlin is such an interesting looking car

@mountainmanjoe
Scotty needs to do a comparison Fiat 124 vs Gremlin

there is no comparison. The 124 is a miata wannabe

124 is TOTALLY a Miata wannabe. I'm 100% not debating that. And the Mazda will be WAY more reliable, I also readily admit. But there's not much else in the Fiat lineup that inspires me and I don't fit in either one anyway. Lol. The Gremlin we had we called "Spike" after the character in the movie "The Gremlins". I was just a kid, but I remember it was very loud and very slow. But I liked it.
