When it comes to repair or maintenance, what is the most brilliant design you have come across? Something that made you go WHOA! And made maintaining a car so much easier than other makes, models, and years.

Also, what is the most horrible design, that make me repair or maintenance a pain in the ass? Something that makes you go through so many obstacles to get to a cheap part, something where the labor outweighs the cost of the part, and maybe even the cost of the vehicle?

Horrible design: BMW X5 2007 and similar engines. When the PCV valve goes out, you have to replace the ENTIRE valve cover, because the damn thing is built in.

Brilliant design: Screwless air filters. You can change an air filter without any tools.

Brilliant: AC-Delco Uniset points. The gold standard for breaker-point ignition, very easy to install and adjust.

What the h*ll were they thinking: Audi models that practically require removal of the front clip to replace the thermostat.

Audi thermostat replacement

With the Audi, AYFKM?!? That’s the kind of stuff I’d like to know!!! I can’t believe that design. Whoa.

That photo is of thermostat replacement on an Audi A6 2.8 with 57,000 miles on it. When Scotty says those cars turn into endless money pits he means it!
