Should I buy a car with this many owners

Hi Scotty;

I'm going to meet with a private seller tomorrow at 8am at the prepurchase inspection.  I've checked the VIN history on the NICB (Nat'L Insurance Crime Bureau) website.  The vehicle is neither stolen nor salvaged.  However, when I looked up the CARFAX report, there were 2 previous owners with the last reported odometer reading being 39,670.  The seller has listed there were 3+ previous owners, and the vehicle now has 108,252 miles.

The last date listed on the CARFAX report is on 10/02/2020.  The cartoon fox on the CARFAX report has given me 2 boxes that say . . .

"Avoid financial headaches.  Make sure the loan has been paid off if you're buying from a private seller."

and

"Hmm, we haven't received any information on this car since October 2020.  Before you buy, ask the seller for recent service or repair records."

How should I proceed?

Thank you!

  • Forget that deal for sure. Any car that said that money owners and that short period of time I would run. There are many cars out there. I wouldn't even think about that one with that kind of history

Any time there is a discrepancy like this then that vehicle should no longer be considered for purchase, period.
