Time to get rid of 2011 Nissan Sentra with 150k miles. I’m going to look for used Toyota Corolla. Are there any model years to avoid? Any engines to avoid? Any transmissions to avoid?
Was it the head gasket after all?
Yes it was head gasket. Still runs ok, but time to get rid of it
Bummer, but time to move on..
Thanks, that’s just what I needed
Avoid the oil burning years (used car buying guide in the FAQ), but really, no matter which one you’re after, have it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic, before purchase..
To save some extra cash, look for cosmetically blemished examples.
I compiled years and engines to avoid in the link Day Walker put.
Off the top of my head, you would want to avoid 1998-2002 (oil burning) , avoid 03-08 manual transmissions (transmission failure), and 2009-2010 (many kinks not worked out in the start of the generation). Avoid the 2.4 I4 in the 2009-2010 model years (excessive oil consumption starting at low mileage), and the LE ECO trim in the 2014+ years (valvematic issues in the engine).
I have a 2003 Matrix with the famous 1ZZ oil consumption issue with about 145,000 miles. Losing about 1 quart every 3,500 miles. Would BG 109 EPR “flush” helps me out with the piston ring issue that plagues these models?
