Should I replace my engine?

Hi Scotty, I hope you are well. Fisal here from California. I bought a 2006 Highlander with 200,000 miles on it back in 2021. Now it needs an engine swap and a new catalytic converter. A mechanic wants to charge me $3600 (labor included) to swap for a used engine. Should I spend that kind of money on a 2006 year car ? Or should I used that as a down payment for a new car ?

Thanks

Use the money for something else. Replacing an engine is a huge gamble. Anything could go wrong if done incorrectly.

Pass. Unless they offer remanufactured units through Toyota itself, you're gambling with a used engine. $3600 and there's no guarantees is a massive no way for me.

Before you bought the vehicle in 2021 with that many miles did you have a mechanic check it out first?  Either way, I would pass on this.

All depends on how much money you have. 3 grand gets you back on the road. You can't sell it with a blown engine. You could fix the engine and drive it or fix it and sell it. Notice what is common in both scenarios.
