At least here in the United States, Toyota is still the best in terms of overall reliability compared to the other manufacturers.  Just about every automaker’s reliability here has taken a hit, but relative to all others they are still at the top.  And that’s why we frequently mention even with Toyota’s that long term reliability is unknown for the newer vehicles, but still a risk/gamble worth taking.  I can’t comment on reliability overseas or in other markets, just here.

Overseas they’re somewhere in between Peugeot (they really have went from the bottom to the top) and Mazda.
Personally I’d rather get a new diesel Peugeot 2008 then then a new Corolla.
The PSA EAT8 (AISIN TG-81SC) is a proven gearbox and so is the PSA DW (Ford DuraTorq) engine.
Both have been out for at least 20 years and both seem to hold up well because they’re overbuild for this type of car. (the TG-81SC used to cause a lot of issues on 200+ horsepower Volvo’s but on a 110 hp Peugeot they seem to be just fine)
While Toyota CVTs have been for a while and still they constantly seem to have new issues; and the Toyota DynamicForce is actually somewhat of a disappointment in my opinion, It’s a just a cheaper ZR-series…
And when I compare the 168hp Mazda 3 with the extremely overbuilt SkyActivrG and the *conversional* automatic SkyDriveG to the Corolla 125hp…
I just don’t see a reason to pick a weaker, less proven design not to mention that, arguably, the Mazda is fun to drive.
The best passenger car ever made is still probably the old 2011-2013 Corolla 1.6 5 speed auto but things have changed for the worse with Toyota…
