Hello there sir,
My father bought a Toyota Starlet 5-door with manual transmission back in '96 , it has 200.000 khm (most of them in town) and now it started to show some problems. He's changing engine oil every 2.500-3000 khm and he drive the car very carefully (40-55, not above that). When we start the car , the idling's between 1.500 to 2000 rpm's , and when we put 1st gear and release clutch, the whole car's shacking for a bit, we play the clutch a bit and it stops. This happens also when we stop while driving ( when the car is hot too i mean ). A month ago, he brought it to the local Toyota dealership here in Kefalonia, and the guys there found out some generic troublecodes which i'm gonna provide to you , (22) , (31) , (33) and they told my father that its 3500euros for the oem parts for the car. I think i need one more opinion from an honest mechanic like you. What should we do ??
EP-91 model
How do you release the clutch in the first gear? All of a sudden or gradually? I’m asking this since you said if you play with clutch the shake goes away.
As soon as i release it slowly, like you suppose to do it, and when the 1st gear catches, here comes the shaking. I'm pressing again the clutch-going to N- put again 1st- release - everything good now...
Check the transmission and engine mounts. Try this too: Start with the 2nd gear and see what happens.
@yaser Good day sir. I've checked all the mounts (engine and transmission) and they are ok, even after all those years. I've tried to start with the 2nd gear and it does the same thing. Maybe the clutch itself is kinda worn? Can a worn clutch do that?
There's also another problem. In the post i'm mentioning that my cars idle is a bit higher (it used to be below 1000 ) and i provide some codes too. Can u help me understand what's wrong with those codes?
When you press the clutch, the shaking goes away, so the clutch should be good. You may have internal transmission issue. About the idling issue, start with cleaning the MAF sensor and change the air filter. If you provide the codes, it may help figuring out the issue.
When we brought it to the local Toyota dealership to help us, even they didnt have a scantool, instead they sorted out two pins from the connector. They came up with some codes but i dont know if they are valid ... the codes are ( 22 ) , ( 31 ) , and ( 33 ) . Im now trying to purchase a decent scantool myself cause idont have any money for huge repairs..
Take the car to Autozone and they can give you the codes.
I wish we had Autozone here . I'm from Kefalonia-Greece {black}:laughingoutloud:
So find a mechanic to do that. I'm still shocked that the Toyota dealership did not provide a scan tool. I doubt that they did not have.
Toyotas are famous for failed engine mounts. Check them again for separation. If that's not it, I agree with Yaser, it has to be a warped clutch disc or pressure plate.
22 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor signal
31 - Air Flow Meter signal (Vacuum Sensor signal)
33 - Idle Speed control ValveOpen or short in Idle Speed Control Valve (ISC)
Find an independent mechanic to source & replace the parts for you, avoid the stealership.
When was the last time you had the clutch replaced or are you on the original factory clutch?
This is the original clutch from the factory!!hehe
Thank you so much sir for the info about the troublecodes
Obviously, it’s time for a new clutch. Replace everything using a clutch kit. Well done on making the original one last for so damn long!
