Toyota UB80F Automatic transmission hunts for gears

Hi, Mr. Kilmer: I’m in need of bit of an advise. My son’s RAV4 with this transmission gives me a bit of a problem. Hunts for gears unsatisfactorily and inconsistently, in my opinion. It has a bit over 33,000 km on it and it has been doing this ever since new, randomly yet not often. A local service folks at Toyota tell me “it’s all as it should be, … just drive in SPORT mode if you like an improvement”.  OK, … it shifts / acts properly when I drive in SPORT, no trouble, …

Anyway, I don’t trust their answer, and I can’t get to the computer yet to analyze it since LAUCH still does not have the latest software for for my scan tool for this transmission.

So, at least for now, I would like to check if the fluid level is properly set, hence my question:

Is there a way to confirm proper level in this transmission? I know factory procedure how to do it, but I don’t have a sheet specifying temperature of the fluid.

Also, I’m being told, by others, that I don’t need temperature, …that one can do it instead simply by placing a transmission in “the checking mode” - wire jump couple specific pins in OBD socket, … than fiddle with a shifter a bit, watch for blinks, etc., etc.

What do you say?

Best,

F.S.

I don't have this specific transy, but I have a dipstickless Toyota transy on my 2013 Sienna. For my transy fluid change, I bought a bluetooth OBD2 device and connected it to my phone. It provided me with a realtime transy fluid temperature, and this made it pretty straightforward for me to get the level right after draining and filling several times to change out most of the fluid. The temp for checking seems to typically be between 36-46C but I don't know if that's true for all Toyota transies.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, BlueDriver you mean? I haven’t checked if they actually up to date to 2019 Toyotas, … but I will now check.

Btw, … when I talked above about transmission check mode method, I got that info from AGCO Auto website. I’m wondering if the description they provide is legitimate?
Best,
F.S.

Yeah with those gas save and transmissions and then power settings so they were actually work better are a little bit squirrely the software is how they have it set up for better gas mileage but yeah then they're kind of squirrely. Perhaps in the future Toyota have better software but me I just driving the smart mode

Follow up on BlueDriver:

I contacted them regarding automatic transmission fluid temperature display and tracking for Toyotas, specifically for those 8 and 10 speed, no dipstick, no removable sump pans ones,… and here is a snip of the response:

<i>"Unfortunately transmission temperature is not part of the OBDII standard live data set and is not currently supported by BlueDriver. We are starting R&D on displaying ATF temp for Chrysler & Toyota (the two most common requests for  fluid changes) but there is no full ETA for release, or a list of what manufacturers will follow.

New features are added in order of demand so I'll record your vote!

Request sent. Thank you for the update.

Great! Now, … if just every single Scotty’s groupie did the same thing, … we probably would have transmission coverage added by Tuesday next, …Spread the word!
