As others have said, it depends on the vehicle. For example a fairly popular upgrade for old AMC vehicles is to install the Jeep 4.0 six cylinder engine and AW4 automatic transmission from a rear-drive Cherokee. I've read that some people have will rig up a switch which allows the transmission to be operated manually instead of setting up the transmission controller module. Whether this is doable on other vehicles I have no idea.
