How to drain capacitors protecting TCM- Bypass is not working

I have a 2005 Buick Le Sabre Limited with 3800 engine & auto trans. VIN# 1G4HR54K35U with shifting problems. Fluid is good & the problems come & go and vary. I have tried by passing the battery with jumpers & used the 1 ohm 10 watt resistor methods and let the jumps run for up to 6 hours with exterior & interior lights left on & doors open. Have tried with ignition in the on position and with no key in and with delay option turned off. Not getting any problem codes. I love & watch your videos but still can't correct my problem. Please help.

Yes, trying to reset the modules back to factory settings.

well that doesn't work for transmissions. The adaptation are non-volatile meaning they cannot be reset. You would have to use a tool to reprogram it, which is a complete waste of time.

You have no idea what you're doing, and you refuse to let us help fix your actual problem.

Good luck!

shifting problems

what kind of "problems'.

Please provide as much detail as possible.

You just saw a "Tag" line. See full question 3:22pm 7/14/23. How to drain capacitor for TCM- Bypass is not working.

Thank you.

I understand you are trying to troubleshoot shifting problems with your transmission.

.

I don't understand what "bypassing the battery" means. I sort of get the impression that you're trying to reset your control modules.
It's unlikely to fix anything, but you have to disconnect the battery and draw some power for a few seconds. Anything at all, such as just activating your brake light or dome light (which turns on regardless of ignition). It only take a few seconds. Forget the resistors and forget leaving it for hours.

.

But for us to help you actually fix your car, you need to tell us the problem and provide all the information. We are the experts, and you are here asking for help because you can't fix your car, correct?
You don't go to the doctor with a belly ache, tell him you think the spleen is bad and ask him to remove it. If you want help, then you need to give your best explanation of the symptoms, and we will tell you what you need. Otherwise, do it yourself.

Yes, trying to reset the modules back to factory settings. Scotty Kilmer says unhooking the battery and using a jump wire from plus cable to neg. cable & installing a resistor on the jumper will drain the capacitors & reset the modules to the factory settings like rebooting your cell phone or computer.

Complete info, there

Yes, Scotty said that & it's true, disconnecting the battery and using a small resistor as he describes, will drain the residual electricity remaining in a cars components.

@imperator suggested using a much faster method which is as equally effective. Why mess with the extra resistor when you can simply use the car's electrical system as a resistor, and drain any residual electricity? It's the exact same electronic principal.

@imperator has said that doesn't work with transmissions & you & Scotty says it does. It must have worked a little the last time I tried it because the lousy OnStar constantly saying "Your phone is unavailable" on start up and that finally cleared.
The transmission was better yesterday but still sporadic. Another suggestion that has somewhat worked before is turn the key to "ON" & after the bells & lights go off, press the brake for 2 minutes the start the car. That's supposed to reset the TCM on Ford, Mercedes & others. It worked somewhat, sometimes. Buick tells me there is no TCM but a Powertrain control module which I suppose is the same thing. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Do you have any other suggestions?

For the third time .... what. is. the. issue?

And you need to provide ALL the info in the posting instructions please, like miles

@imperator has said that doesn't work with transmissions & you & Scotty says it does.

The statements above are all correct. How?

@imperator 's comment refers to resetting your TCM using the "resistor method" and whether or not it will fix your transmission issues.

Scotty's video is about resetting your car's ECU. Specifically to erase old codes stored by the ECM. His "resistor method" is a very safe, inexpensive way to clear the DTCs from a car's ECM but without having to buy "a fancy scan tool". Here's that video: https://youtu.be/1tiCXAr-Uho?t=83

My comments refer to another method of discharging the electricity, but both methods accomplish the same task. From Scotty in a previous video: https://youtu.be/XKqotZjqbBQ?t=43

We're trying to help you but all we really know is you have transmission "issues"...

Thanks. Have seen both of those. Guess I need to find someone between Bradenton Fl. & Indianapolis that has a better scan tool than my $700 scanner. Is Scotty still in Tennessee? 🙂

I don't think the reset trick is even going to clear permanent DTCs

Is Scotty still in Tennessee?

Scotty's been in Rhode Island. I don't know if he's made it back to Tennessee yet but you can check out this link from the FAQ  which tells you exactly "How to contact Scotty for an in-person appointment".

There are two wonderful things about the advice from these forums:

One, it's free.

Two, ya' don't have to listen to it.

Hope you get your transmission issues sorted!

a better scan tool than my $700 scanner

but what are you going to do with it? Your control modules are mostly likely working perfectly fine or you would have warnings.

A $700 tool is pretty expensive and should be able to do most things.

There is no problem with your car, is there?
