I bought a 2000 Camry at around a year ago and I haven’t had anything really happen but I’ve been always noticed that it didn’t shift as smooth as my 2005 Corolla and I was wondering if it just needs a transmission fluid change, I checked the Color and smell of the fluid and it was still red and didn’t smell burnt. It’s currently at 196k km so about 121k miles. I didn’t get a chance to ask the previous owner when it was last done. I was just wondering if I should do a transmission fluid change or just leave it alone on the chance that the transmission is slowly dying.
By your description I'm guessing someone has already changed the fluid. (New fluid has a clean red color. The more it's used the darker it turns.)I didn’t get a chance to ask the previous owner when it was last done.
Check the level and other than that if it shifts good leave it alone. Those transmissions are pretty durable, many have logged 250k miles or more.
