I just picked up a 2002 buick lesabre with 47,000 miles and due to the age I'm about to perform a fluid exchange on all fluids but wasn't sure if it would be safe to perform a transmission flush at that age.

It is safe. The only reason I wouldn't change it if it was over 150k miles and had never been changed. The age should not matter.
