I own a 2013 Scion TC RS8, which had its transmission rebuilt which cost me almost $3400. The original issue was input shaft bearing and most likely the synchro's going out.
Symptoms:
Cold morning start to drive even with a 4-5min warmup there would be a minor grind from 1st to second and second to third. These issues would go away when car is driven for a good 5minutes. Meaning when the car is fully warmed up. Shifts like butter but when cold. Shifts like garbage.
Situation:
Currently I have to drop off the car once again to the shop. I feel like this guy is just straight up scamming me. Since a new transmission was literally only $3.1k at the dealership.
Mechanic:
He thinks it has to do something with my clutch and the master cylinder... Which sounds like he wants to charge me even more for something that should of have been resolved during the rebuild.
COMMUNITY:
Please help me! What is wrong with my transmission?
P.S. It's at 82k miles. Also the clutch was replaced when the transmission was rebuilt hence the bill being so large. He also gave me a ridiculous reason for why the clutch was so expensive. I didn't recall what he said, I was just upset at the cost when I was only quoted 2,200 for everything and $400 at most for clutch which comes with the rebuild. I just wanted my car back and now I feel like I'm deeper in the hole. When the car isn't even worth as much as I am spending to repair it....
THANK FOR EVERYONE WHO ANSWERS. SCOTTY <3

rebuilt transmissions are not reccommende her at carkiller. its known that rebuilt have alot of problems after being rebuilt, because something always goes missing or simply NOT rebuilt right. to use the machines to rebuilt it, is costly and very hard to use. of course there where mistakes. now, if the new transmission is only 3,100$ i highly reccomend, you return the rebuilt transmission and get a refund, then install new transmission. you will never finish repairing a rebuilt transmission ever. Now, there is an exception, some but not all, REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION ARE THE WAY TO GO, they are built to exact spec and most of the time they last alot of miles without issue. As for your grinding issue, you have a worned out clutch, your last choice would be to replace transmission filter and refill tranmission fluid with OEM ORIGINAL car dealership transmission fluid and put exact quantity, replace any other transmission filter as well. ask for a service print copy and follow all instructions. Do this only if you dont have a OBD2 SCANNED code, buy a scan tool from walmart 20$ only, scan the code and let us know so we can further help you with your car symptoms
1. Well the rebuild has been said and done. Can't exactly tell him. Hey you eff'd up and now get the remanufactured transmission.
2. Worn out clutch? When I stated the car has a brand new clutch?
3. OEM transmission fluid was ordered and filled when repair was done. As of itemized receipt.
4. What would a scanner do when I have no codes active on my dash?
Yea, I think your right. Cut your losses and get a new trans mech. Be careful, not many good ones out there anymore but being manual is a plus on your side.. And your clutch ain't causing the grinding...
@hillbilly
Well the rebuild is under warranty. So I'm expecting him to go back and checking what he did wrong. Plus this is the highest rated transmission shop in my state with over 100+ satisfied reviews hence why I chose this place. I didn't go in blind. If that's what everyone is planning to state.
No, not at all and we all make errors. With what you just said, yes proceed and if he's as good as his rep, he'll fix it but it may cost you.
@hillbilly
cost? so its still out of my pocket when i came in for a repair that didnt resolve the issue? what a scummy world we live in.
even though the rebuild is under warranty? hum... I'll have to talk to him about that.
Everything is negotiable, be positive and see what he does, maybe will fix you right up. gl
