I have a 1996 nissan maxima with about 178K miles on it. As far as I know the ATF has never been changed. Its still cherry red and smells fine. Would it be worth changing it or do I risk damaging the transmission if I change it?

If it has never been changed then I would not touch it, only keep it topped up. New rejuvenated fluid will probably loosen a lot of crud and start to create shifting issues.
