It's easy. My 87 Camaro had the 700r4 just like the vette & I put a shift kit along with the vette servo in.

Is the orange needle itself just broken or is it misaligned when going through the gears (ie showing reverse when it's in neutral)?

no it doesn't move
stays in od

First pop off the face plate, should be 4-6 T-15 or T-20 screws. Then GENTLY (can't put enough emphasis on that) try moving the needle to another position, I'm guessing it will move to any of the gears as it sounds like it snapped or popped out its place.

I'd recommend against trying to glue it if it snapped, if it's merely out of its detent then pop it back in along with a dab of quick dry super glue. Be careful as the assembly is almost 100% plastic & you don't want the glue getting into other parts.

If it is indeed broken, you'll need a new assembly. I don't think I still have one in the parts bin so your best bet is to check Vette forums for the shift indicator assembly. It'll include that black plastic "belt" that moves with the shifter.

If you can find a complete new old stock assembly on ebay or a forum I'd go that route as it won't likely be brittle.

The other option is to look around for a local car being parted out & getting all of the parts you need.

If you need anymore info along the way, be sure to take pictures of anything involved so I can better walk you through the process.
