2017 Toyota Tundra, 5.7L, SR5, CrewMax, 4x4, extended fuel tank, with 25,000 miles on it now. I bought it brand new from Toyota in October 2018 (2017 left over) and paid $10,000 less than the comparable F-150 at the time.
I've been looking at a travel trailer to purchase within the 3,000 to 4,000 pound weight class. I've been to 8 dealers and every salesperson tells me that Tundras are not known for their towing ability or are horrible at towing. When I ask why, they all say "that's their reputation."
My wife and I are recently retired, so we won't be hotrodding around in the truck, just taking some short trips. The truck is also not our daily vehicles as we have two cars that we use to drive around town in. The truck is just for trips now.
Why does it have this reputation? What should I be concerned about?
The salespeople at the trailer dealerships that you were at are all idiots! The Tundra will tow those trailers no problem. It completely baffles me as to why they would say that to you.
your truck should do great on 4000 pounds
there are some videos on youtube, saw one guy complaining about the tundra, but i think he was trying to pull 10,000 pounds?
It’s when you need to tow much higher weight that the Tundra would not be as good as say a truck made by the Big Three. If you plan to tow, for instance like you say, 3,000 to 4,000 lbs (plus additional weight within the trailer) the Tundra is adequate. Also, take what salespersons say with a big grain of salt.
Everyone here commenting has never towed with a Tundra. They just look at the capacity chart.
The Tundra's suspension is not meant for towing. The truck gets very unstable at highway speeds and is exhausting to drive with a heavy load for long distances.
The Ecoboost 3.5 V6 that comes standard and is the smallest engine from 2017 F-150's made 470 Lb-ft of torque, and the outdated, inefficient, and overpriced Tundra powertrain only produces 401 at max levels.
The tundra will suffer under hard loads. The only reason you buy one is for the reliability.
What’s the towing weight when the Tundra does that? OP is not going to be towing 10,000 lbs. I would never recommend a Tundra for those heavy loads, but 3,000-4,000 lbs is fine.
