Should I buy a 4Runner or Highlander

Topic starter

We are looking at buying either a used Toyota 4Runner or Highlander. I really like the Tacomas so I lean more towards the 4Runner but does anyone know which is best?

Clarification: OP needs a bigger vehicle with good reliability, ability to tow, budget of $10k, and looking at 2005-2012.

OP’s Towing requirement: 3,000-4,000 lbs

Both are good vehicles, but what do you need out of your next vehicle?  And which years are you looking at?

We need a bigger vehicle that has good reliability. Would also like the car to have a towing package. Were looking to spend $10k so were mainly looking at 2005-2012

@jsquad091 how much weight (max) do you need to tow?

@DayWalker 3,000 - 4,000 lbs max

@jsquad091 I would go for the 4runner in that case.

4Runner vs. Highlander?!

It comes down to Body on Frame vs. Unibody, IMHO.

BoF is more truck like. Trucks are mainly built this way. Uni is more car like. Cars are built this way.

Assuming both have an adequate engine for your towing needs (and you look at the tow rating fir each).

If you do a ton of towing, and heavy towing, 4Runner.

Otherwise it’s a toss up n what you like in terms of how it drives, and how it looks.

They are both Toyota’s, so I trust boths reliability.

If you do towing and want a truck like experience, get the 4Runner.

If you want a more comfort oriented vehicle and not that much towing, and a better ride, get the Highlander.

For your needs, I'd recommend the 4Runner. For more info on buying used cars, check out the Used Car Buying Guide and Frequenty Asked Questions; linked below.
