  • I have a 2007 Scion TC with 120,000 miles no check engine light on and I was wondering can the car handle a turbo I ask because it’s an aluminum block and I want the car to be zippy thanks

I would say, do not risk it! A car with that mileage and with a small engine might not handle a turbo charger. You can still turbo charge it but it might wear out the engine event faster.

A turbocharger can be installed on an engine IF:

  • There is enough room to install the setup
  • It has upgraded fuel injectors to inject more fuel for the increase in air volume
  • It has an upgraded fuel pump to pump more fuel to the bigger injectors
  • It has an upgraded cooling system for the coolant and oil
  • It has a proper ECU tune to take into account higher volumes of air and fuel, and provide adequate ignition timing
  • The turbocharger only runs a MAX boost of 8 psi. Anything more on stock engine internals will grenade your engine and/or transmission
  • You're willing to fail an emissions inspection if you live in a state that requires those. If you're only going to be using it on a private track, then you can ignore this.

There's a lot of work involved with turbocharging an engine. If it's a project car and not a daily, then by all means experiment and see if it works out! That's why we get cheap project cars...to do fun stuff like this on them!
