Unusual sound when AC is on.

Hello Scotty, you have a great channel. Congratulations!

I have a question about the AC unit in my Toyota Corolla 2009 (1.4 D-4D) 100 000 km. When the AC is on you can hear a strange metallic sound outside the car, like there is a friction between two metallic parts. This occurs only on a hot summer day when the AC unit is on an almost full load. What could be the cause? Otherwise the AC is working properly.

If you're lucky it might just be a pulley. However it may well be your AC compressor going bad. Have it checked out before using the AC any more. If the compressor self-destructs and locks up it will send debris into your AC system and most of the parts will need to be replaced.

Maybe the AC compressor? You should pinpoint the noise.

Chuck is right. Get it checked by a reputable diagnostic shop, now. If what Chuck says is true, you may be able to avoid a large repair/replace bill by attending to the potential issues now, particularly before spring moves toward summer, when everyone and their brother has A/C problems.

It sounds like its your AC compressor or the AC clutch. You should get it checked out before It causes problems with other components in your AC system.

Thank you all. Obviously I have to tackle it before the summer.

The issue is that the problem appears when the AC is on a max loaded. Last year I tried the mechanics from the dealership but the weather wasn't hot enough and the guys couldn't pinpoint the problematic part as the sound didn't appear.

This year I made an overall diagnostic of the car (was going to sell it, but changed my mind) and no error codes were present.

If the dealership cant find the problem go to a honest mechanic they should be able to find the problem.
Good Luck with everything.
