jaguar xj dips violently left right when steering is rocked left to right, can you tell what causes this?

Really can't tell from here but generally that kind of thing would be caused by severely worn front suspension components. Have it checked out by a good mechanic.

First, inspect your car for broken or missing sway bar links. They connect the sway bar to the control arms or struts with large, vertical bolts. They're usually easy to see, but not always. The sway bar is supposed to reduce the effects you're describing.
