Volvo 240 reliability

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a Volvo 24- series car as my first car. Most of the listings I see are for cars with more than 100k miles on them. I've heard that the 4-cylinder versions are good, but is there anything I should watch out for?

In general those Volvo 240s were very robust and reliable as anvils but the newest (1993 model) is now 28 years old going on 29. On a car that old, even one known for reliability in its day, anything and everything can be a problem and some parts may be hard to find. Unless you enjoy wrenching and hunting down parts it's probably not the best choice for a first car. You can find more detailed information on forums devoted to those cars, like this one:

They were built like a tank but you are talking about a very old car. I would not consider it for a first car.
