1985 Plymouth Voyager, automatic transmission, 2.6 liter engine has 104,000 miles. Dash board shows "Gate Open" in red letters when the tailgate is closed. I open the tailgate with a switch on the dash and shut the tailgate and light "Gate Open" remains on dash. I open the tailgate with a key to the tailgate lock and again shut the tailgate and light on dash remains on. How can I resolve this issue.

the hatch switch is probably worn out
Where is the hatch switch located, how do you remove the switch, and where do you buy a replacement switch? I have checked several auto parts stores and am told I must contact a Chrysler dealership. Also, if the switch is located near the hatch lock, I don't see anywhere on the inside of the hatch where I can access the switch. The opening for the hatch lock is only about 3 inches by 2 1/2 inches and removing and replacing the lock may be impossible.
I don't know anything about Chryslers, sorry. Try searching on Youtube for videos.

The best thing I can think of is using RockAuto. That van is almost 40 years old. Anything that could possibly be found in junkyards is equally worn out. Check a good Haynes manual out for steps on how to replace the hatch switch.
