2014 VW GLI - 245K miles - 75% highway miles
I'm getting a clicking/over/under revving/chain slipping type noise between 1K-2K rpm in the variable valve timing
My mechanic noted my oil pressure is low but within spec
I replaced my timing chain a while back, my low pressure vvt solenoid about 100K miles ago, and replaced my camshaft magnet and the control valve behind it about 10K miles ago. Recently got a P164d code but went away after adding Lucas oil stabilizer oil as topper.
My mechanic today mixed my regular 5W-40 syn oil with some thicker Motul oil but I still hear the sound, slightly muted. He said all points lead to the camshaft but we should try some simpler, less expensive fixes first.
Would it be better to try and replace the original OEM oil pump and new low pressure vvt solenoid as next step or should I start saving for a camshaft replacement?
The cam on my car and the phaser are one piece which will probably cost $1500 with labor.
I cant go buy a new/used car. Need to keep this thing running. Plus I love it. And it has a new suspension and new clutch kit and fly wheel.
Do you mean a Jetta GLI?

155 mm is a little over 6 inches.
Well, I'm certainly not a Volkswagen fan, but you seem to want to keep yours so I'd say start saving up. There's no point in Band-Aiding repairs on an engine when it's torn down. You really need to fix everything that's broken
check the timing chains.
A lot of these have a chain between the cams that gets stretched.
