Scotty! I own a VW LT MK1 1982 Sven Hedin. I have an issue where the engine stops at red lights, but starts fine and takes off. (sometimes coughs a bit before starting) It only shuts off during red lights, and never done it while in gear and driving. Only seems to happen in neutral and when the engine is hot. I've checked fuel lines, fuel filters, but to no avail. The car is a 2.4 Diesel engine. What do you believe could be the problem? Thanks for all the awesome content throughout the years.
What do you believe could be the problem?
The engine does not get enough fuel or/and air to run.
Have you checked fuel pressure?
Have you checked thottle?
Do you have clean air filter?
What is condition of the battery/charging system?
Any vacuum leak?
Does it stop even if you press the gas pedal?
Maybe scotty / other forum members have access to better data but I couldn't find anything for a car that old.
But I did find that the LT 2 had lots of issues with the injector pump dropping out and injectors getting clogged - maybe that's also the case with the LT 1.
So I checked for vacuum leaks, it has a small one on the headgasket.
I replaced it, and checked the battery as you suggested.
One of the poles was a bit loose, so I tightened that.
I haven't had the problem since, and it idles just fine now - so I figure one of your suggestions solved the problem.
Thanks!
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for feedback.
