Hi Scotty I wonder what your take is on waterless antifreeze if it’s worth it I have a 2011 Toyota Highlander I just bought with 39,000 miles everything on it is fantastic but since it is nine years old and hasn’t been run that much specially in the last six years I was going to change the coolant I’ve change the oil and I was also going to change antifreeze differential and what other fluids I can but I was just wondering what your take is on waterless antifreeze I saw a YouTube video from Jay Leno‘s garage in here He had a guy describing his company and that they made waterless antifreeze and it was a very interesting video if you haven’t seen it I’d recommend you seen it but again what is your take on waterless antifreeze coolant thank you

Don't do it.

The waterless coolant does not flow the same as current 50/50 coolant.

There is the potential to strain and increase wear on water pump.

Thanks for the help Carlos will stick with the original

Snake oil.

I think it's a way to extract more money from your wallet.

Water has a very high specific heat capacity, and best of all it's FREE! It's been good enough for our cars for over a century. What has changed?

I decided to do a bit of research into this. First, I checked the safety data sheet for "Evans Waterless Coolant" ( https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71k9VBQ8B7L.pdf)

It's just 90% ethylene glycol, along with some small amounts of organic esters and salt. Absolutely nothing revolutionary. Ethylene Glycol (EG) is the antifreeze we used to put in coolant, before we switched to the superior, longer lasting organic acid based coolants that we use today. It's old hat.

So this product is basically pure EG. It's a terrible idea to run pure antifreeze. Water is what cools your engine. The job of the antifreeze is... surprise! keep your coolant from freezing.

  • specific heat capacity of water = 4.19 kJ/kg-˚C
  • specific heat capacity of pure ethylene glycol = 2.38 kJ/kg-˚C

( That means water is almost twice as effective at carrying away heat than EG)

Short version: It does not cool better than manufacturer recommended coolant. It does not last longer than manufacturer recommended coolant. Avoid.

Well I've never used it but I've talked to guys who spent a lot of money using it and they say it works perfectly fine but it cost a fortune and of course anytime you get a leak then you got to replace that expensive stuff

Stick to what works:  50/50 coolant.  Why mess with something that already works?

the topic has been covered and answered in the forum. Just use the search.

as I understand it, it has no thermal expansion.

total rubbish

I agree with mountainmanjoe.

Stick to what Toyota says and use it. Why bother changing something that works perfectly fine?

I was just curious about the waterless sander freeze in the reason this is at it has a higher boiling point keeps the engine cooler and with the water being absent it’s supposed to keep the water pump bearing and other items in the engine from ever wearing out I know ever is a tough word to use but it just seem like really good technology especially if the car is going to be sitting for long periods of time you don’t have to worry about The antifreeze going bowed in your engine or separating just curious thanks you guys for your thoughts I appreciate the feedback

If that's what the marketing tells you, then I already know they're scumbags.

- In a healthy system, the coolant never reaches boiling temperature.

- The engine doesn't need to be cooler. It needs to be held at its optimal temperature.

- The water pump bearing does not touch the coolant.

what does "going bowed" mean?

Thanks for adding what you found i use my voice on my phone for spelling and texting going bowed should have been going bad A lot of that makes sense man I really appreciate your help it’s so easy sometimes to get snookered into that stuff can you end up doing more damage than you think Again I appreciate all your help

I've never used it I offer to try it out for the company but they never got back to me. Not super expensive stuff I guess Jay Leno uses it on some of his fancy cars it's supposed to last forever and it's kind of a gel I guess. But really minor vehicles were made for 50% water 50% antifreeze I'd stick with the factory stuff myself

Hi Scotty.

Is it possible if you can make a video discussing about the advantages and disadvantages of putting Evan's waterless coolant  to your car. Some people claimed is the best solution to getting rid of having to keep changing the coolant and causing corrosion inside the engine comparrment because of the water factor, others claimed that coolant tolerates more heat and it does long term damage to the engine by making it running hot for long periods of time. I wanna listen to your expertise and research data.

Thank you.

I have a 2008 Lexus GX 470 about 150k.  Since about 100k, my former mechanic ran Evans waterless coolant, which is still in there.  I am now doing all maintenance and repair and know that the Toyota HOAT coolant is the advised choice. I am leaning on going back to HOAT even though I haven’t had any issues with Evans.  Any comments or familiarity with Evans and long term effects vs OEM coolant? Thanks all.

please use the search function. This question has been answered before. Thanks.

Thank you, I should have done that first. I will be flushing mine out as soon as it warms up.

Hi Scotty,

Please advise us your opinion on Evans Cooling.

Best regards

Scotty,

The only reason Evan's interests me is, as I understand it, it has no thermal expansion.  As it gets hotter it does not expand so it won't squeeze out of pin holes.  You can open the radiator while it's hot and it won't boil out.

My question would be how will that effect the use of an overflow bottle/reservoir?  Since it doesn't expand or contract the overflow bottle would seem pointless.  Any thoughts?  Anxiously awaiting your thoughtful reply and maybe even a video on YouTube for all your fans to see what you learn.
