I'm looking to turn something from the 80's 90's into an offroad beast.
Jeep Cherokee.
Import cars:
Hilux (if you have the extra cash to import one)
Where I live, the popular choice is 98MY Suzuki jimmies, but they're 1 year too new to import.
They made these without any real changes for something like 16 years.
US market cars:
The old 4Runner is pretty much identical to the Hilux (expect for the reputation)
Suzuki Samurai builds are always special
Obviously old Land Crsuiers

The Marty McFly Toyota Truck would be sweet if you can find one. And @dan has some great suggestions (especially the samurai).
But if I was doing it, I’d take @chucktobias suggestion for a Cherokee. They’re plentiful, parts are plentiful, and many are still in running and driving condition. Really good aftermarket support, too. Or maybe a CJ-7.
Could also consider a Chevy K10, truck or blazer, but these days any square body that has an intact frame is gonna be way overpriced, most likely.
