Am considering a Highlander AWD..
I once had a Honda Element AWD- loved it ! Was told all 4 wheels were continually engaging. As far as the newer Highlander AWD, I’m told only the wheels that need to engage, engage. ??

Do you mean a new 2024 model? Or a different year?
Every AWD system is a little different, and often there is very little information available about how the systems actually work. They usually just give you some deceptive marketing jingo. But Toyota makes some of the best drivetrains out there, so you can be pretty confident that a Highlander will go anywhere you need it to.
