What is the best 2023 midsize 2 wheel drive pickup for mileage and dependability?

I would usually say Tacoma because it has a good track record. However, the new Tacoma is an all new design, using either a turbo 4 cylinder or a turbo 4 cylinder hybrid. There is no track record of this specific engine combination.
But Toyota does have a good track record overall.

I would look at a used Tacoma from the prior generation BEFORE Toyota switched to the turbo charged versions in the new (current) generation. A Nissan Frontier from 2019 model year and older is an honorable mention. Stay away from the other brands.

If you don't actually need a pickup, don't buy one and get a car or SUV. If you do, get a used one.
