Hey Mr Scotty,
I’m looking a old used car to buy as my first car. I’m new to driving so I’m buying automatic transmission. I know high mileage will be there but what is the limit? I didn’t want to go over 100k but 15-20yr old cars will probably have more than 100k. I’m fine with that and even looking in cars that last long with good reliability and no high maintenance cost. What older car with good automatic transmission would you recommend? I’m stuck between toyota, honda, and lexus (es300 series or ls430).
Too many variables.
It depends on the car, engine, and how well it was looked after. Larger displacement engines generally last longer. It also depends on your budget, and if you can fix them yourself, etc. (I personally don't need to buy anything over 30k, and I wouldn't touch anything over 100k.)
20 year old cars will be near the end of their lifetime, so... I think 150k should be your hard limit.
lexus (es300 series or ls430).
if you're on a budget then you shouldn't be looking at luxury models.
Stick to the Corollas etc.
what is the limit?
It’s similar to choosing a wife/girlfriend.
As @mmj said, mileage is only one of the many other variables, when picking a used car. Go by the overall condition, especially if on a budget.
