Dear Scotty,

What is the transmission (Co) which is in a Hyundai Santafe 2013 2.4L 4WD.? I have tried to research the same. However, it is not showing up the correct answer.

Is it safe to change the transmission fluid at 150,000 KM for this car?

Well it is four-wheel drive and they're often. Unfortunately I don't have access to the information but get your VIN number and call a dealer and they can look it up and tell you what type of transmission and pray it's not a jatco  but some other transmission

Thank you for reply. Would it be ok to change the transmission fluid at this point?

If it’s a petrol, there’s a 99% chance it has the solid A6 automatic.

Most likely the A6MF2 (a revised version of the original - that doesn’t have issues with screws inside it becoming unscrewed from vibrations)

Very solid transmission, but you should replace the fluid every 30K KM, all of the failures on this transmission are caused only by improper maintenance.

I believe the Hyundai manual even tells you to inspect the fluid every 4 oil chances (37.5k miles).

You probably have a dipstick, take it out - look at it. If it’s burned and smells - there’s room for thinking. Otherwise it’s 99% safe to change (might require re-adaptation but it’s easy to do on a Hyundai)

ATF SP-IV is what Hyundai’s used to use (check you manual that it is the correct fluid) and it’s dirt cheap fluid you should replace VERY regularly.

Read Your Manual - it probably has all the info on service intervals and fluid types.

@Dan,

The dealer wont change the fluid since apparently its a the Lifetime fluid nonsense.

The previous owner has not changed the fluid and its a sealed transmssion.

Would it be safe to change now. 153,000 |KM.

FIRST look at the top of your transmission Bell-housing (where the transmission is connected to the engine) it should say “A6MF2” If it doesn’t or says something different, will have to do more research but if it is:
It’s not sealed, Hyundai just removed the dipstick for the US market.
http://www.hsfmanual.com/fluid_repair_procedures-273.html (fluid replacement procedure is easy, it’s detailed under “replacement” and they note that “replace ATF every 60,000 miles for severe usage”)
As I see it, you’re between a rock and a hard place. After so much time on the same fluid - id assume that it’d get clogged and cause issues, but there’s a chance that it’ll slip if you replace the fluid.
I’d keep the old fluid if slips, and if it feels even a bit strange after the oil chance i’d run adaptation

This gearbox is simple, and at least where I live rebuilds are common and cheap.

@Dan,

Alright. But I have heard that changing it for Asian cars would be ok since unlike some american cars, these would have metal parts if transmission fluid wasn't changed.

As it is its 153,000 KM (Around 95k miles). Would it be ok if I changed it now. Not flush. Drain and fill only. I want to keep the car for a long time.

Your car is not equipped an Aisin transmission, it’s built by Hyundai.
and as I said many times - it’s a gamble, I don’t know if your friction packs still can grip, and I do not know if its already clogged.
But when the fluid isn’t changed - the official lifespan is 180,000km according to Hyundai (so I’d imagine it’s already heavily internally worn)

@Dan,

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation!
