2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Consumes Oil

Hello Scotty!

I purchased a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4L automatic last year and heard that this engine has had problems with oil consumption.  Alot of unhappy customers including me and my wife. We've gone to Hyundai to see about doing an oil consumption test, but they are dragging their feet and basically told us keep driving it until the engine locks up, and then maybe they will do something like replace engine, but I don't have any hopes with that.

What should I do? Sell it get something else  and carry my negative equity over to the replacement vehicle?

What's the best move here??

Thankyou for answering my question.

Welcome new member,

Negative equity on a 2016 Hyundai?  I expect that on this forum, most of the answers will be to get rid of it as soon as possible.  And that is the correct answer, generally.  But if you aren’t in a good situation financially, and you hurry, you could just end up with something worse.

If the car is otherwise running OK, I would just go with it.  Check the oil frequently and top it off as needed.  Keep up with maintenance. Then when you get back above water, start looking to make a trade.  But be patient and make sure that what you get is better made and more reliable than what you have now.

Good luck!

Hyundai products are notorious for burning oil because they didn't make the piston rings properly. Up to a quart of oil per 1000 miles is "normal." It's not normal, and a new engine is likely going to do it too.

I have a 1999 Ranger with 293k miles, it leaks around a quart of oil per 5,000 miles because of a valve cover gasket.

The dealership is going to make you drive it until it dies because it's way out of warranty, and then attempt to sell you a new one.

I would sell it and get a Honda CRV or something like that.
