i got a 2012 chevy cruze with a 6 speed manual and i was wanting to know what rpms to shift at. when i drive it i try to shift every 4k rpms but i dont know if it is a gook rpm to shift at or if i am being to hard on the engine.
i want to get the best gas mileage and it has a 4 cylinder 1.4l turbo. it is front wheel drive
Then you'll probably want to shift at the lowest RPM for a given road condition without lugging the engine. The best shift points will vary depending on the combination of engine characteristics and gear ratios - and (not to be too repetitive) you want to avoid lugging your engine!
All this is something that comes with experience in driving a manual transmission. If you do an internet search you'll find some tips such as:

Shift at the lowest RPM the engine is happy with.
manual driving is a "feel" thing , not really something you can learn on the internet. Find someone experienced to teach you.
@itwt that's what they say for best fuel economy. It reduces engine "pumping losses", and I'm pretty sure it's what all the "eco" modes optimize for. No you won't be going anywhere fast.
It's not that simple, there is no single rpm that it's best to shift at. It depends on the engine design, prevailing conditions, and what you're trying to accomplish. In general though 4000 rpm sounds a bit high to hit with every shift.
