Hi Scotty
I am looking to get a new to me SUV
I am trying to keep it under $20k
Choice #1 2017 Mazda CX5 with 30,000 miles
Choice #2 2013 Toyota Highlander with 86,000 miles
I may pull a small sailboat (less than 500#) otherwise it will be my primary vehicle in New England. With our winters both will be 4WD
Whatever I buy I will have it inspected by my local mechanic.
I am looking for longevity...which should I get.
I am getting rid of a GMC Yukon that my ex-wife inherited that has been nothing but a money pit.
Although I am a Toyota fan, the CX5 is sexier. And Mazda is getting up there In terms of reliability.
They are both good Highlander would be more reliable over time but the CX-5 is a better car overall if you like the Mazda more then it should be pretty reliable until 150k miles or more.
Also consider a 2018 Honda CR-V LX 2.4, or a 2016 Toyota Rav4
Mazda's newer cars haven't been out long enough to prove reliable. Go with the Highlander. You'll be glad you did when it hits 500,000 miles on basic maintenance.
