I'm interested in buying a used 2006 Honda civic sedan with 124,000 miles. Vehicle looks to be in excellent condition and its on sale for 4800$. How reliable is the 2006 civic and what are some common problems of this vehicle. I know these cars are durable but I'm looking for secondary opinion to help me make a well informed buy.
Thank you.
Run away!

Cracked engine blocks are so common that you should not even consider it. I would go 05 or 11 model years as those are more reliable.

Skip to 3:05 for his thoughts on 2006 Civic
What do you think of a used 2008 mazda 3 with 150k miles then?

They are good cars but realize they have weak automatic transmissions some of them were made by Nissan which tend to fail around 130-150k miles. The motor mounts are also issues.
There are some years of Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics that are fantastic! Consider those.
2007-2008 Toyota Corolla, 2011 Honda Civic, 2012-2013 Toyota Corolla, 2004&2006 Toyota Camry (V6 ones are pretty fast)
nah man the civic are good i just wouldnt get the first model year of it. car wizard doesnt knw sht about honda
Bro the first year is 2006.
like kerem said the first model years had problems but not 2007 and up those civic are better than post 2014 ones with cvt. honda much better than the mazda 3 btw
The only issue is my budget. What are your thoughts on a 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4D with 126k miles on it.
No. 120-130k miles is one problems start to pop up on Korean cars. That is why they are inexpensive. That said, if you can find a 08 09 Elantra/Spectra with low miles, it could be good as I own an 09 Sportage 123k miles with no issues at all. For less than/more than depending on condition I would recommend getting a 2004-2008 Toyota Corolla. Might not be as fun as a Civic but neither is the Hyundai so I would look for a Corolla. Also, Kia/Hyundai's from those years did not have the quality the engine and transmission could do 160 170k miles but the rest of the car fell apart. Look Corolla. Or, consider a Toyota Camry, you should be able to get an 03-06 one below 5 grand pretty cheap.
To sum it up, would you be ok with looking into a Toyota Corolla?
just spend more money and get a lower mileage civic /corolla and keep it forever
@jebrim
Depends on year as well
You would be better off getting a 2011 Civic or 2008 Corolla for example than the Mazda 3, even if it was %20 %30 more expensive, as it would last longer. You are looking at a 2005 Corolla which is a pretty good car.
A Mazda at 150k miles is on its last legs. Interior isn't nearly the quality you'll get from a Camry around that time. Find a 5th gen Camry with the 5 speed automatic transmission which would be 2005-2006. Shouldn't be hard to find one. Those are amazing cars and still look somewhat modern.
What do you think of a 2005 toyota corolla with 159k miles?
Yes, definetly look into a Corolla, specifically 2004-2008. They are excellent cars and actually have quality. I would not pay much for one with 160k miles. I can find 08 Corolla's owned by grandmas having 33k miles just under 8 grand, so I would not pay more than 3 4 thousand for one with 160k miles. Look around on craigslist.
The most reliable years tend to be 2007-2008.

The toyota corolla i found is the 05 model with 159k for $3000. I'll be checking that out later today
Nice! Make sure to have an independent mechanic check it out before buying.
Check for common issues as well: https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Corolla/2005/
The most severe problem I found was "transmission hard shift" which on average cost $800 to repair. Pretty rare though. Electrical and paint issues are also common as they are on any car so just have a mechanic check out the mechanical condition. If it is good, go ahead and buy it!
