Need a new used car to ferry me back and forth to work. My 2006 honda civic is rusted out and on the verge of becoming unsafe so I will be purchasing something different in the spring of next year. What sedans would you recommend for around 5000 canadian. I guess around 3800 American. And used car prices are insane so a used 2007 honda up here in decent condition with around 270k km is going for 7000 or more. Are there any other brands that would be reliable and decent fuel mileage and what mileage would be too much for 5000 to 6000 bucks? Long read I know. That's not much money to work with in this market. Anything you find is going to be old and will need to be checked carefully for rust as well as mechanical problems. Maybe look for something that has cosmetic issues (hail damage, bent fender, worn interior, etc.) but is otherwise in good condition.
When looking at old cars other than Toyota and Honda most fall into the "run away" category, and even with those two you need to avoid models with known problems.

Gm cars with 3800 engines are decent cars. I would also look into panther body styles (Ford crown Vic,...)
