Best catalytic converter cleaner? For my 09 malibu 3.5
My cat is welded on
why do you want to clean it? Are you having vehicle problems? If so, please describe them.
Question, @mmj, would it be beneficial to clean the catalytic converter periodically to prevent a problem from developing. Seems that once it becomes noticeable that they are becoming clogged with decreased engine performance, it is past the point of being able to clean them sufficiently. ? I have 165k miles on my Avalon and was thinking perhaps it would be a good idea to clean the cat.
no, it's not beneficial.
If you keep your engine in good working order, get it up to proper operating temperature regularly, and do your maintenance, then you will never need to touch your catalytic converter (until it naturally wears out of course). Leave it alone. Don't fix what isn't broken.
Thanks.
I have p0430 bank 2 on i changed oxygen sensors and that did not help car runs fine
I think people are mystified about how cats work.
It's really pretty simple.
The only time a cat cleaner will work is if the precious metals get coated and the exhaust gasses are "shielded" from them.
Typically that happens when an engine has been running rich (carbon buildup on the metals) or if the engine has been burning oil (oil buildup on the metals)
So like @mmj said, "keep your engine in good working order"
The best way to protect your cat is frequent oil changes and monitoring your fuel trims.
Occasionally stick your finger in the exhaust pipe. If your finger is oily try changing the PCV valve.
Also look for high negative fuel trims BEFORE you start getting a P0172 or p0175 code.
Once you get those codes the computer has lost the ability to adjust fuel trims to maintain a 14.7:1 air fuel mixture and the result will be carbon buildup in the cat.
exactly. But I think the cat is able to self-clean to some degree, so the engine would really have to be spewing.
