Transmission won't engage

I got a 2006 dodge Dakota 4.7l v8 with 164,000 miles with automatic transmission, it jumps to high gear when warm, is the transmission going out

can you provide some more detail please. What are you doing when the problem occurs, and what precisely does the truck do in terms of what you hear/see/feel?

When you shift to drive, it jerks, and won't take off, it also does it when put in reverse,

First, check the transmission fluid level on the dipstick.

Their is no dip stick,

The guy i got it off of said its done that for a while, but didn't give milage when it started

Oh ok thanks

I checked the fluid with the vehicle running, and its full

then yeah, the tranny is probably worn out. Not unusual for a Dodge with 164k.
You should always have a mechanic inspect a vehicle for you before you buy it, so you don't buy trash heaps like this. You spend $100, but you save thousands.

Ok, but theirs one thing I don't get, it did it last summer, but threw the whole winter it didn't do that.

it didn't jerk at all in the winter, or it just took longer to warm up? Temperature makes things expand and contract, so the season can affect mechanical things.
