Will low oil shut a car off while driving?

Will a 2008 Toyota Camry LE shut down if the oil level is not registering on the dip stick? Trying to determine if that was a reason my daughter's car shut down while she was driving the other day. I read that 2007 - 2011 camry's burn oil. Just wondering if that particular car has a fail safe oil sensor to shut down to prevent damage.

The only car I can recall doing that was the Chevrolet Vega. Unusual for the time it had an electric fuel pump that would shut off if the oil pressure dropped way down - or the sensor went bad. This was mainly to kill the pump in case the engine stopped running after an accident.

With the Camry if the oil level gets way too low the engine will stop when it throws a rod. Best to just check the dipstick once in a while.

It's the Camry 4-cylinder 2.4 engine that suffers from the inherent oil burning issue. If you have a V6 it's not a problem.

That's some pretty fancy technology if a Camry could do that. I highly doubt that's a thing. Generally, the engine will run until it either it throws a rod, or the engine locks up due to not having enough oil and it becomes oil starved.

What was the fuel gauge showing?
