I’ve been on the hunt for a Tacoma for a couple months but I’ve have no luck. I want to buy my uncles 2003 Tacoma that has 340k miles for around 2.5k he hasn’t told me how much he will sell it for exactly. My brothers and relatives say it would be a waste of money to buy the truck cause they think it will not last in my ownership and I should get a cheap sedan instead. but the only other car I like is the late model camrys. But I would like a second opinion. Are they right that it’s not worth buying my uncles Tacoma that has 340k miles? Or will that Tacoma last me a good while and worth the money? It’s either buying that Tacoma or me shopping around for a late model Camry(2018). Thanks anyone for sharing your thoughts.
Do you have to get to work or school everyday in your car? Do you have an alternative if the Tacoma breaks? I'd get the Camry just because it would be a lot more comfortable, better on gas, etc.
Do you need a truck? I have dozens of neighbors with trucks, and I almost never see any of them put anything in their truck bed that wouldn't go just as well in a sedan, wagon or SUV (where it would be secure and weather-protected).
Yeah you do have a point. It’s mainly so I have a car to get around since I don’t have one. I only wanted a first gen Tacoma because they look sweet.
I forgot to add that I’m currently looking at a 2018 Toyota Camry Se for 15k. It has 65k miles
How about get a Camry or Corolla for 12,500 and ask for right of first refusal on your uncle's Tacoma when he sells it. When your uncle is ready to sell (or you come across another nice Tacoma) you can get scratch that itch, but not worry about getting to work/school on time (at least until you get the Tacoma totally sorted out and are comfortable with it as a daily driver). For many gearheads, one vehicle is not enough, if only "what I'm gonna get/fix next."
I would pass. That's a lot of miles and even if it was well maintained there will be some repairs needed soon.
I'd skip on both the Camry and the Tacoma
If you check out the USed Car Buying Guide linked below you will find years of Toyota & Honda to avoid including the Camry. 2018 had transmission issues.

The Tacoma has too many miles.
