alarm going off

I have a 2004 Honda Civic Coupe, 125,000 miles original tranny and engine. Its been sitting for a while, maybe 2 hours of run time in the past 6 months through cold Connecticut winter. The battery was dead so I took it out, charged it, and when I went to replace the terminals the car sprung to life blaring the alarm. The ignition was in the off and the immobilizer key was eons away. Scared me to death and sent me in a panic. Disconnected the terminals and choked the air out. What happened and what do I do?

You might need a new battery when they get wacky they will turn the alarm on by themselves
