ZF 8-Speed in Tundra?

I know that Toyota has released some photos of the 2022 Tundra pick-up and although it hasn't released any specs yet on engine, transmission, etc. Since of the redesign, it made question this: Why hasn't Toyota put the ZF 8-speed automatic in the current (2007-2021) Tundra? It could have helped with towing and mpg.

Good question, but it would be out of step for them to use a transmission from another manufacturer that they don’t own.  At the very least, they would use their own Aisin 8-speed (used in the Lexus ISF and GSF) before using the ZF 8-speed.  But they were probably going for reliability overall so went with the lower gear transmission over the 8-speed.

The in-house one they used is bombproof and in keeping with the character of the truck.
Mileage was always the Tundras Achilles heel, and it was going to take more than just transmission to fix it. Sounds like the ‘22 will probably score better
