| Hi Scotty, our 2018 Ford Expedition has been one problem after another. But since about 95k miles (we have 120k on it now), we’ve battled the p0420 CEL. Shops have been no help. We replaced the cats with an aftermarket high flow set, replaced the O2 sensor on that side, used spark plug foulers in the after-cat sensor, changed coils, ran premium fuel and gas additives…still a CEL. When the CEL is tripped, performance and gas mileage take a hit. What next? Change the plugs again? Thanks! | |||||

| Just checked the data on my scanner and it's showing that both O2 sensors are working. Idk what voltage should be on the sensors though. Both O2 sensor monitors have completed and the only code I have is p0420. | |||||
| 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix still getting P0420 | 14Relevance | 4 years ago | UnknownLegend | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Howdy, I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix with an L26 (Buick 3800) that is well over 200k miles. I've replaced the catalytic converter with a new aftermarket Walker converter and I've replaced both upstream and downstream O2 sensors from ACDelco. It is still throwing p0420 and there are no exhaust leaks. Is there anyway to fix this besides using the O2 sensor spacer hack? I'm planning on registering the car in West Texas where there is no emissions testing, so I'm not too worried about it, but I figured I would try to find a fix. | |||||
| Answer to: P0420 code on 2016 Jeep Partiot | 14Relevance | 4 years ago | Kaizen | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Like @Daywalker said. It might be something else besides the cat, so it could be something upstream from the cat. With that said, the two times I got p0420, in two different cars, it was indeed diagnosed to be the cat. If it is truly the cat. Depending on your state, you can go to a third party mechanic or muffler shop, to get it fixed for a fraction of the price. If it is California, New York, and several other heavily regulated states, the dealer may be the only option. | |||||

| p0420 does not always mean the catalytic converter is the root cause. You have to do the proper diagnostics and confirm (or rule out) that it is the catalytic converter. For that start here: | |||||

| ... Cheap. It only has 150,00 miles but has a hard code for p0420 I managed to still get it to pass emissions inspection by clearing the code and and driving to the emissions station really quick. It has a few issues, I don't think the catalytic converter is clogged because it has good power and is flowing out the back very well. I was told by my mechanic that most often in those Nissans it is a vacuum leak. But we hooked up the smoke machine and NOTHING can be seen. It's driving me crazy. The O2 sensors seem to be operating as they should. It also has another ... | |||||
| P0420 code on 2016 Jeep Partiot | 14Relevance | 4 years ago | Tim_Bow | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2016 Jeep Partiot with 2.4L engine and a regular automatic 6-speed transmission. The computer is giving me a p0420 Code: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). A Jeep dealer checked it out and told me a need a new catalytic converter. They said it will cost $1,000. I don't want to spend that kind of money. Are there things i can double check first? Or maybe take it to a local muffler shop for a cheaper cost? Thank you. | |||||
| Answer to: another P0420. I tried lacquer thinner and now the car starts VERY ROUGH | 14Relevance | 4 years ago | Doc | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... older vehicles used to have metal pcv valves. Today, they are all made from some recycled abs or pvc water bottles that actually melt when exposed to the chemicals in some lacquer thinners. Use the designated CAT cleaners for best results in getting rid of that p0420 and find out what is happening in your fuel system upstream that is causing the CAT to lose efficiency. | |||||

| Hi, I got a p0420 issue for Honda Odyssey 2011 ~170k miles; I figured I'd give the lacquer thinner a shot. Put a gallon of lacquer thinner in 7~8 gallon gasoline. Drove for an hour on highway. When I tried the car on next day, car stutters to start up. I had to try 3 times to get it cranking. Did lacquer thinner cause an issue for rough start? I mean it didn't fix the cat problem, but now it seems started a new one 🙁 | |||||

| Hey Scotty, I’m getting a check engine service light, my scan tool tells me it’s a p0420 error code. I personally do not think it’s the manifold. I have changed the spark plugs, changed both oxygen sensors, everything under the car from the manifold to the exhaust is brand new. I have reset the codes about 5 times and it comes back up, but it varies, at 50 miles or 30 miles after reset, it did recently pass emissions inspections on my last reset about a week ago and it did not pop up again after 65 plus miles. I used cata clean and this seems to have worked ... | |||||

| I have a 2011 Buick LaCrosse with a 3.6L. It is automatic and has about 86k miles on it. My check engine light came on yesterday, and it threw a p0420 code. It ran fine yesterday, noticed it was a little sluggish for about 5 minutes and drove it again today and it seemed to be fine. I took it to the repair shop and he said it needs a new catalytic converter without even looking at the car. Is it this or could it be a 02 sensor I keep seeing that could be the possible culprit? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. | |||||
