| Answer to: Timing chain replacement interval | 27Relevance | 4 years ago | MountainManJoe | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I can't speak for Subaru, but this is not the case for my manufacturer, and not on any vehicle I've ever owned. I have never seen a pushrod engine that had a replacement interval for the timing chain, and I've never witnessed one start to rattle, even after 200k. They are lubricated by the engine oil, and last just as long as the engine.I don't think Doc owns any vehicles from the last 30 years so his info may be out of date. | |||||

| ... lifespan of the powerplant even more. [...] The engine is not really problematic until it hits 150,000 miles. From this point on, the 1.8L engine is like a bomb and you never know when it's going to explode. CARARC also quotes that the engine faces lots of timing chain issues and that it needs repalcement at 100 KMiles, Is this something you have heard of? Is it too expensive? They also suggest to change the water pump every 30 KMiles??? The timing chain seems like a good idea - it shouldn't be replaced like the belt. But the chain in this engine is m ... | |||||
| VTC Actuator Honda Crosstour v4 | 27Relevance | 5 years ago | KathBart | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey there Scotty, love your videos. I have a 2012 Honda Crosstour 4cyl with a timing chain with 166,850 miles on it. My vtc rattles for a few seconds at cold start up. I had the vtc changed once before at 50k. All of my maintenance has been performed on schedule by the dealer including the VTC. Now that the VTC is rattling again 2 Honda dealers say not to bother changing it. What do you think? Will it hurt the engine or timing chain to let it go? Am I due for a new timing chain? No check engine lights (ever) it’s been a good car and I’d like to keep it. But I don’t want to ruin the engine either by letting this problem persist. Should I get a new VTC and timing chain now? Or wait until the check engine light tells me there is an issue? Last on YouTube some folks say to turn the key 2 clicks but don’t start the car to wait and to do this a few times and the VTC won’t rattle. This doesn’t work for me consistently. Is there any logic to it? thanks so much | |||||

| Hey Scotty and the community, I hope all is well with you! My best friend's dad has a 2016 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI with automatic transmission and 168'000 kilometres (105'000 miles). It's been now about 25'000 miles that the dealership told him to replace the timing chain because it might break very soon and he wouldn't even drive the car anymore. My friend and I drove the car to my independent mechanic and he said it won't break yet, but it'll need replacement soon, which might be a 10 grand repair, but he'll have to do it at an Audi dealer because they have such i ... | |||||

| You don't need an engine rebuild just to replace the timing chain, guides and tensioners. If the timing chain fails then you will need a new engine. Fix it now before it's too late. Get a compression test to see if it's worth it. | |||||

| Timing Chain cover oil leak in 2006 Toyota Avalon | 27Relevance | 6 years ago | wierdal | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Is there a safe and viable "stop leak additive" for leak in gasket in timing chain cover? Leak is just a few drops per day and has been happening for20 months 20,000 miles. Have changed the oil twice but never had to add oil between oil changes. Dealer has to pull engine and wants $3200 to replace gaskets and reseal timing chain cover. Car has 192,000 miles. I rent a car for long distance trips. | |||||
| Timing variation | 27Relevance | 5 years ago | saw | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| How much variation in degrees of timing at idle would be considered problematic? As I understand it, and please correct me if I’m wrong, due to engine or timing belt/chain/tensioner wear, timing at idle will start to bounce around a little bit. At what point should one start to be concerned? And, upon reaching that point, what is the solution outside of rebuilding the engine? Would replacing the timing belt/chain and tensioner resolve some of the issue? I’m dealing with a 2002 Ford F150 with a 4.2 L engine with160,000 miles (its timing at idle is about 14° +/- 4°), but this could probably apply to most engines. | |||||
| emergency tire chains | 28Relevance | 4 years ago | Thomasthetank | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I live in Alabama, we do not get much snow or ice, but every now and then we do. I am currently in a 2012 Nissan Murano with limited AWD. I want to keep something in the car for emergency snow, or ice. there are 4 emergency type tire chains that I see. Does anyone have experience with these or might know how good they are? I am leaning toward the ones with actual chains on it that use a ratchet system to tighten. Because I think the 2 plastic options may be crap and will not do in a bind. I think the ones with the actual chain may be easy to put on if I am on the side the road and look like they may hold up a bit. The all chain ones, z chains, look good but may be to too much hassle or to difficult for a novice if its wet, snowy and I am on some dirt shoulder on the road. Any help you have on this would be great. All of them have good reviews on amazon but you never know I guess. Thanks... also I guess I don't know how to add photos, so I just listed these links. sorry. | |||||

| Hi! I have a 2009 Lexus IS250 (V6 2.5 liter RWD) with 197000 miles on it. There's a story with this- bear with me. I had the alternator replaced on this car. I tried to replace it myself first and was so angry by the time I was done messing with it that I brought it to a mechanic. I work an hour away from home. I drive it home and it runs perfectly. I get in it the next day to go somewhere (I don't even remember where) and it cranks just fine and drives for about half a block and the motor just dies. No strange noises, wasn't overheating, none of that. I try ... | |||||
| 2009 nissan versa diagnose "skipped timing chain" | 26Relevance | 2 years ago | Johchrmor9 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Car is automatic with 110,000 miles and a p0304 code. Nephew said one day car started running really rough and when checked p0304 code but not sure when code actually popped. I changed coil and plug in 4 cylinder still crank but no start. Had a "mechanic" come look at it and "timing chain had skipped." Is it possible to diagnose skipped chain by just turning key bc sounds like normal crank, and if not what ways could I diagnose a skipped chain. Thanks for any help, Chris. | |||||

| How to tell if a car has timing belt or chain? For example Honda Civic EX 2014. But I want a general method, when shopping for a used car I want to know if that particular car has a chain or a belt. For the Honda above most sites said chain, but Kelly Blue Book (KBB) said belt. The Honda User Manual PDF does not cover this topic. | |||||

| Hi, so it says my 2004 Honda Accord lx is suppose to have a timing chain but I don't see it. I do see the rubber belt. Is it possible they swapped the chain for the belt? Or am I looking in the wrong spot which I don't believe I am. I'm looking right on the side of the engine and I could almost be certain it's a belt. If it is a belt is it possible to change it back to a chain? | |||||
