Hello Scotty,
How’s it going in Tennessee? I bet it’s nice compared to Huston. I’m in CA and there’s a mass exodus as well here.
Looking to buy a new car and stuck between two. American vs Japanese. 2021 Buick Encore GX or 2021 Honda Civic hatchback sport. I’ve watched your videos for a long time and can already hearing you saying go with the Honda. I would typically agree but value your opinion.
What is you overall opinion on each in a more general sense?
i started reading up on the engine and transmission combinations for both manufacturers and had some thoughts.
What is the reliability of the Buick CVT and the 9-Speed Automatic 9T65 transmissions?
also the Buick had either a 1.2 or 1.3 turbot engine. I am not familiar with direct injection engines and how they have held up or time. I have a 91 accord with 350k manual trans and am comfortable working on most all model of vehicles but through the mid 2010s.
how does the engine models in the Buick and the Honda hold up in terms on long term reliability.?
Would you agree that the long term cost of ownership will be higher on the Buick compared to the Honda?
my opinion, the Buick aesthetically seems to be at a good price point for its features and tech. Doesn’t look half bad and feels like it’d be comfortable on longer road trips. Less peppy compared to the Honda but feels like it what it lacks in performance makes up for it in creature comforts. My biggest concern is the reliability of these car because of the American car reliability stigma
Opinion, the Honda is more young and modern feeling. Very peppy and good control when driving in more aggressive and conditions that require an extra sense of concentration; through the mountain twistys. Is not as smooth and comfortable compared to the Buick. Stiffer suspension? More sporty buy not lacking with compartment space. There is less internal room for luggage and passengers, but it still feels big for what is it.
as I mentioned before, I very much value your opinion. I’m not one for reaching out, especially online. Thank you in advance, and keep making those amazing you tube videos as long as you can.
Regards,
- KC
I wold buy the Civic, however while at the Honda dealership look at the CRV as well. Please social distance yourself from any GM or Fiat Chrysler dealership
Unfortunately, like the Accord, the CRV is not turbocharged only.
Buick used to make good cars but now they are more like luxury cars and they have electronical. They break down before reaching 100000miles and their maintenance cost is really expensive. In my opinion if you wanna go with Buick lease it.
But if you reliability and performance get honda civic type R or honda civic si coup both are fun zippie cars and last u for long time if taken care properly
If you.want performance and luxury get acura. Acura is honda luxury line
If you plan to keep the vehicle for as long as possible and get as much mileage as possible out of it, go with the Honda Civic. GM quality has been steadily going downhill for a while now and best to stay away from them, especially out of warranty. GM already had issues with their own 8-speed AT, so I don’t have high hopes for the longevity of their 9-speed AT also designed by then (which also had issues):
Also, those 3 cylinder engines are all-new for GM cars here in North America and so you would be a guinea pig for them if you buy it (and they are not even paying you to test for them 🙂 ). Plus with 3-cylinders turbo charged under all that pressure they will wear out sooner.
To mitigate the oil dilution in the turbocharged Civics see below:

Ultimately, if you value longevity, and want a car to last, you want a naturally aspirated engine. Ideally you want a naturally aspirated engine without GDI. Although I would take GDI over forced induction. I believe the Encore is turbocharged only. GM isn't known for making the strongest engines to begin with so adding a turbocharger really isn't a good thing long term so I would run from the Encore. A naturally aspirated Civic should last you forever. That is the way to go.
Honda Civic, but watch out for oil dilution.
Definitely the Civic, no question.
Buick Encores based on an Opel design and are built in South Korea, if that makes any difference to you. German complexity with Korean quality control.
